After a string of unsuccessful signings up front in recent times, West Ham are now targeting in-form Köln striker Anthony Modeste to bolster their attacking options for next season.
With the likes of Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri not bringing the success many hoped they might, the Hammers are now desperately short of options to lead the line, often hinging solely on Andy Carroll and his unpredictable fitness.
Now, the Mirror reports that Slaven Bilic has turned his attentions to Germany and Modeste, where the Frenchman is enjoying a prolific campaign in the Bundesliga this season, scoring a fantastic 24 goals in 29 appearances. His tally is a record for a French player in the Bundesliga and he is behind only Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the overall charts.
At 28 years old, Modeste has been around for a while, and even played (briefly) in the Premier League for Blackburn Rovers, where he failed to score in nine appearances.
Since then his record has dramatically improved, after successful spells in both France and Germany, the Frenchman is now catching the eyes of many clubs around the continent.
After a drastic dip in form, questions remain over the future of West Ham boss Slaven Bilic at the London stadium and the Croatian was given the dreaded 'vote of confidence' by the club's hierarchy last week.
Regardless of whether Bilic remains at the club, FC Köln won't be keen to sell their star man in the summer. The Hammers, however, have shown themselves willing to spend big to get their targets, and shelled out for Andre Ayew last summer, to break their own transfer record.
