Football has been rocked today by the revelation that Chelsea's tireless midfield star N'Golo Kante has an identical twin brother, and that the Blues have been rotating the pair on the field all season under the guise of one player.

The discovery came on Twitter when eagle-eyed fans shared a picture of N'Golo and his brother Fredi Kante doing sprints at training with the first team ahead of Saturday's clash with Crystal Palace, prompting a speculation frenzy on social media.

Conspiracy theories had arisen earlier in the season when manager Antonio Conte referred to "both Kante boys" in a post-match interview, which was initially put down to a 'language barrier' issue in an official statement on the club's website.

However, now Conte and both Kante brothers confirmed what few had suspected at a hastily arranged emergency press conference on the morning of April 1.

"Yes. It is true. Chelsea have been playing N'Golo and Fredi this season. When we brought N'Golo in from Leicester in the summer, [Claudio] Ranieri told us that they actually come as a pair," Conte explained, flanked by both midfielders, who helped intercept most of the journalists tougher questions.

"Individually they are fantastic, but one twin can't handle the frankly ridiculous expectations. We have registered both of them but no-one seemed to notice," Conte added.

The Premier League and FA both confirmed that Chelsea have broken no rules by employing both twins, but are investigating whether there have been instances when one Kante has replaced another at half time without an official substitution being made.

"It is hard work, doing this much. I'm good, but I'm not that good. I need help from time to time," N'Golo said.

"I've made the most tackles in the last three Premier League seasons, despite only playing two of them. Did you really think it was only one guy doing all the work?"

By the way...happy April Fool's Day :).
