Tottenham Hotspur are keeping their eyes on Real Madrid and Croatian star Mateo Kovacic, with the hope that Real Madrid will decide to sell him.

Kovacic isn't reported to be unsettled at the Spanish giants, but he is not getting much playing time with them, so it is likely that he will leave to get more game time if offered the chance, and Tottenham want to take him, according to the Mirror.

Real Madrid only recently signed Kovacic in 2015 from Italian side Inter Milan, for a fee of around £25m on a six-year-deal. However, reports are said that he has a buy out clause in his contract of £21.8m, so if Spurs were to make an offer of that sum they would have to accept it.

Spurs will find out in May if there is a chance of signing the talented midfielder though, as that is when Madrid will decide if they want to keep him or sell him on.

If they were to sell him then Spurs could go in with a much smaller bid than his release clause is and get him on a steal, with Madrid prepared to listen to offers around the £17.5m mark.

The 22-year-old had made 14 appearances for Madrid in the league this season, with four of those coming as a substitute. This has prompted talks between Kovacic's representatives and the Spanish club about his long term future, as he is not getting the game time that they think he deserves.

Kovacic would certainly give Pochettino more options in his midfield and boost their chances of winning the Premier League, and progressing out of the group stages in Europe, which they haven't been able to do in recent seasons.
