Patrick Bamford never really made the cut at Chelsea and subsequently, the English giants decided to part ways with the English striker as he joined Middlesbrough in a deal worth £6m.

The forward enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at the club previously when they were a Championship side and must have thought he could rediscover his best form under Aitor Karanka.

Well, that theory has not gone well so far. The striker has played just 42 minutes since his move and amazingly, Bamford did not even make the matchday squad for Boro's trip to Stoke.

Supposedly, the 23-year-old actually went to speak to Karanka about his lack of involvement in proceedings so far and was dealt the most brutal response.

It was reported by the Telegraph prior to the match that Karanka was prepared to drop top goal scorer Alvaro Negredo and turn to another January recruit, Rudy Gestede.

Boro look set to be embroiled in a relegation battle until the end of the season with goals a huge issue at the Riverside this season.

Whether the banishing of Bamford out of the squad was a tactical decision is yet to be revealed, however, the timing and nature of it does not play well for the former Chelsea man.

This is now the second week running in which he has failed to make the squad after missing out last week in the 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace.

Tough times for Bamford and his potential route back into first team football appears to have been closed for now.
