Fernando Torres suffered a horror head injury during Atletico Madrid's 1-1 draw with Deportivo La Coruna on Thursday night.

Antoine Griezmann had saved Atleti blushes with a stunning 25-yard strike, before the game was overshadowed when Torres was forced off on a stretcher after a nasty clash of heads with Alex Bergantinos.

It has now been reported that Torres may well have his teammates to thank for their reaction. Torres' doctor, Dr Carlos Larino, said after the game, via Goal, that the actions of team captain Gabi and Sime Vrsaljko were "perfect".

The quick thinking pair to attempt to unblock Torres' airway as he lay unconscious on the pitch.

"Gabi even took a bite from Fernando when opening his mouth. What he and Vrsaljko did was perfect," Dr Larino added.

The result means Los Rojiblancos' title hopes are likely over, although the match was a stark reminder that football is merely a game. Torres has this morning been released from hospital after clear scans on his brain.
