Liverpool legend defender Phil Thompson states that he would take Ross Barkley at Liverpool, via the Express.

Barkley has struggled to impress new manager Ronald Koeman with a bad run of form at the start of the season and struggling to find a place in this Everton side, but he has hit better form in recent weeks.

The England international has scored and assisted five times so far this season, in all competitions, with the vast majority of those coming in his 24 appearances in the Premier League.

Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports Pundit Thompson, who made 340 appearances for the Reds between 1971 and 1984, admits that the Everton midfielder would work well with Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

When asked by Sky Sports if he would have Barkley at Liverpool he reluctantly said: "Yeah. Yeah I would. I think he's that flair player that Liverpool have at the moment.

"Listen, I would have the Ross Barkley that's on form and I think most of the teams would want that.

"You don't want the Ross Barkley who's finding it difficult to find a place in this team; playing left, playing right, playing as a holding midfield player - which I don't think suits him.

"But the player who plays as well as we do, I would [take at Liverpool]."

Everton v AFC Bournemouth - Premier League

Last season Barkley played in every Premier League match scoring and assisting eight times each. Even with a bad spell of form it seems that he could beat his contributions from last season in less games.
