Tottenham could be set to lose one of their key men from the last few seasons - according to his mother!

Jan Vertonghen has been at White Hart Lane for four years, having signed from Ajax in 2012 - but his mother has warned that he could return home from north London sooner rather than later due to homesickness.

It's unlikely that Spurs will allow him to leave anytime soon, but his mum thinks that her son could come back home, despite the defender signing a contract extension that should see him remain at the club until 2019.

“Jan is starting to miss home," Ria Mattheeuws said to a Belgian radio station (via the Evening Standard). "I see him coming back soon - we will see. Home could also mean Amsterdam. His girlfriend is from there.”

Vertonghen, however, doesn't seem to be intent on going anywhere. After extending his deal earlier this month, he expressed happiness at being around for future endeavours.

"It's a big relief. The future looks great so I'm very happy to be a part of it," he said. This is an unbelievable group of talent. There's a great buzz around Tottenham."

Tottenham, who made a great start to the season, are currently in fifth place on the table, 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea and just one point behind Arsenal for the fourth spot on the table.

They could edge closer to the Blues, however, with another derby match-up against their bitter rivals set for January 4.
