Arsene Wenger is not a very popular man right now, but according to reports coming out of his home country, the Frenchman isn't all to blame for the Gunners' transfer activity this summer.

Fans have been left disappointed by Wenger's shopping. Instead of building on the signing of Granit Xhaka with more high-profile acquisitions, Wenger has signed the likes of Rob Holding and Takuma Asano (who can't even play in the Premier League this season).

However, as per Get French Football News, the manager has been trying to get Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann since the middle of the Euros.

Wenger is said to be very keen on signing his countryman after watching him link up with Olivier Giroud during the tournament, but the player's release clause, which stands at €100m, has proven an issue.

Surprisingly, the report states that Wenger is very willing to shell out the amount. However, the powers above him are refusing to sanction the move. It is also understood that Griezmann isn't averse to joining the London-based side.

Despite the fan backlash, mainly at Wenger, the board won't release the funds, and have left the manager to soak up all the blame.

Arsenal v Liverpool - Premier League

Arsenal have picked up just a single point from two Premier League games this season, losing 4-3 to Liverpool on opening weekend, then following that up with a 0-0 draw against champions Leicester City. That in itself could have easily been a loss, as the Foxes deserved at least one penalty.

There are still a few days left in the window, and if all this really is true, perhaps it's time for Wenger to consider cheaper attacking options.
