Arsenal are interested in bringing in Hoffenheim centre-back and Switzerland international Fabian Schär with the aims of bolstering their defence following the long-term injuries of Per Mertesacker and Gabriel.

SportBild (via Getfootballnewsgermany) report that the 24-year-old could join the North London club for as little as €10m after the player spending just a year in the Bundesliga following his move from Swiss side Basel last summer.

Schär, who is also on Spanish outfit Valencia's radar, is said to have caught the eye of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger many years a go.

in 2013 Swiss Tagesanzeiger speculated that the then 21-year-old defender was due to make the move to the Premier League club during that season's winter break.

This comes after strong reports that Arsenal have all but signed Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.

Sky Sports reported that the 24-year-old German international had agreed to join Wenger's side but the two clubs involved are yet to agree on a fee for the player.

Mustafi, who is believed to be valued in the region of £30m, is still training with Valencia who will be preparing for their opening La Liga game against UD Las Palmas on Monday.

However the former Everton centre-back's father has added to the transfer speculation surrounding the player after claiming that two or more clubs are in the race to capture his son's signature.

His father, who also his manager, told Goal"Very soon you will know about the future of Mustafi. Two or more clubs are in negotiations."
