Chelsea have launched a £39m bid for Sporting CP and Portugal star Joao Mario, according to Portuguese newspaper Jornal De Noticias.

The report claims that Mario's agent Kia Joorabchian made the offer along with a matching bid from Inter Milan which also included £4m in bonuses.

Sporting are said to be more receptive of Chelsea's offer, however, as the Blues are willing to pay more cash up front. The player, despite being focused on affairs at his current club, would prefer moving to the Premier League if push came to shove.

Despite the midfielder's willingness to continue on in Portugal with Sporting, he isn't averse to moving and will not offer any resistance as long as the clubs can come to an agreement.

Chelsea aren't the only Premier League club interested in signing Mario. Liverpool are believed to be readying a bid, and will include striker Mario Balotelli as part of the deal, per Record - another Portuguese publication.

Sporting aren't interested in any deal involving the former Inter and Manchester City striker, though, according to the report.

Mario scored seven goals and also made 12 assists for the Portuguese outfit last season. He also lifted the European title during the summer, with Portugal ousting all other contenders to claim the trophy.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have added to their strike-force and midfield this summer, having signed Michy Batshuayi from Marseille and N'Golo from Leicester, yet they have not been able to bring in a defender.

While the signing of Mario would prove immense, the Blues would probably be better off getting another centre-back before the close of the transfer window.
