Joe Allen is set to undergo a medical at Stoke City on Monday as his £13m move from Liverpool gets ever closer, with the Potters appearing to have won the race for the Welsh midfielder.

The Liverpool Echo report that Allen agreed terms with Mark Hughes' side over the weekend after his countryman sold him on a move to the bet365 Stadium, with just final details to be ironed out before the move can be finalised.

Swansea City had also showed a firm interest in Allen, but failed to match Stoke's £13m bid after having an £8m offer of their own rejected earlier in the window.

The Swans appeared unwilling to pay over the odds for a player who was entering the final year of his contract, having flitted in and out of the Reds' starting lineup after his £15m move from the Welsh club back in 2012.

Allen looked likely to move quietly back to the Liberty Stadium this summer, but his impressive Euro 2016 performances put him well and truly in the shop window - with a place in the team of the tournament after Wales were knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual winners Portugal.

With the arrivals of Georginio Wijnaldum and Marko Grujic to add to the already-crowded Reds midfield, Allen looked set to get even less action than last season, which saw him start just eight Premier League games all season despite injuries to the likes of Jordan Henderson.

Allen is expected to complete the move to Stoke in the coming days, before meeting up with his new teammates on their pre-season trip to Florida.
