Hottest Transfer Rumors Around the MLS

Even though the transfer window in Europe won't be officially open for a few more days, the transfer rumors are not going to stop any time soon. As one might expect, MLS is no stranger to all the rumors, as several players consider the league a suitable destination, while European sides are beginning to target American-based players. The transfer talks aren't going to stop any time soon, and here we present you a collection of some of the biggest transfer rumors in MLS over the las week.

10. Asmir Begovic Considering a Move to MLS

The Bosnian keeper is currently under contract with English Premier League giant Chelsea, but he said he wouldn't rule out a move to MLS if the opportunity arises. He also confessed he believes the league is "very attractive right now". Begovic's arrival would increase the league's quality by a mile, since he's one of the most promising keepers in Europe due to his age and experience.

9. Jaime Ayoví Close to Signing with Columbus Crew SC

The Ecuadorian striker was one of the best players for his country in the 2016 Copa America Centenario, and his recent performance could allow him to move elsewhere. Currently under contract for Godoy Cruz in the Argentinian Primera Division, the 28-year-old is pretty close to sealing a deal to join Columbus Crew SC. He would form a very good partnership with Ola Kamara upfront.

8. Octavio Rivero and Dairon Asprilla Set For South American Return

Two other South American strikers make our rumor list, but in this case it's because they are set to abandon the States. One of them is Dairon Asprilla, as the former Portland Timbers winger is set to join Millonarios in his native Colombia. The other is Uruguayan striker Octavio Rivero, who hah offers from Peñarol and Nacional, but opted to move to the Chilean Primera Division where he'll play for Colo Colo, arguably the biggest team in the country.

7. Two MLS Teams Interested in Oscar Cardozo

Scroll the calendar a few years back and Oscar Cardozo was one of the best attackers in Europe while playing for Portuguese powerhouse Benfica. The towering striker remains in Europe and currently plays for Trabzonspor, but he's looking to move elsewhere. 'Tacuara' is reportedly considering a move to MLS, and two teams (New York Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake) have already expressed an interest in signing him.

6. Gilberto Getting Close to Leaving Chicago

The Chicago Fire are done with Gilberto, and the organization has spent the last few weeks trying to unload the contract of the Brazilian forward. Even though Chicago hasn't been successful, they might have a chance to let him go since Brazilian side Santa Cruz is pretty close to completing a transfer for the 27-year-old attacker. It would be a great move for the Fire, as Gilberto has been one of the worse Designated Players this year.

5. Steve Birnbaum Isn't Going Anywhere, Says DC United

Steve Birnbaum has been linked with a move to the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Israel, and teams like Maccabi Tel Aviv and Feyenoord have submitted transfer offers to land the 25-year-old center back. DC United, however, is not looking to part ways with the USMNT International, and they have declared they are not going to sell their star defender this season.

4. Montreal Impact and Toronto FC Battling For Ukranian Starlet

Even though Oleg Gusev isn't the dominating midfielder he once was, the Ukranian playmaker is still a pretty talented player. The former Ukraine International is not transfer listed, but that hasn't stopped the Montreal Impact and Toronto FC to pose eyes on him. Dynamo Kyiv will have to accept the negotiations since Gusev is still under contact with the team, but the 33-year-old would be a very good addition for either side.

3. Montreal Impact Interested in Serie A Striker

Italian sources have reported the Montreal Impact is pretty interested in Bologna striker Matteo Mancosu, and a deal could be completed sooner than later. The 31-year-old hasn't played much for Bologna in recent seasons, he spent last year loaned out in fellow Serie A side, Carpi, and he would welcome the move since he'd likely have more chances to feature for Montreal. Mancose would be a solid backup for the starting attacking duo of Didier Drogba and Dominic Oduro.

2. Seattle Sounders Targeting Nicolás Lodeiro... Again?

Nicolas Lodeiro was set to sign with the Seattle Sounders in May, then the negotiations broke down during June. It's only fitting the talks have been reactivated during July, right? Several South American outlets have indicated Boca Juniors and Seattle have agreed on a transfer fee, and it seems both parties are getting closer to sealing the deal. Will Lodeiro end up in Seattle this time?

1. Luis González Generating Interest in MLS, Asia and Europe

The Argentinian midfielder spent most of his career playing for FC Porto in the Portuguese Super Liga, and even though he returned to River Plate a few years ago, he isn't fit enough to play in that league anymore. Due to this, 'Lucho' is already looking at alternatives to extend his career, and according to his agent "a few MLS teams have already asked about him". Reports have indicated the 35-year-old will either play in Asia, Europe or MLS, but the latter seems the most likely.
