After a two-week break where teams were able to recover injured players, MLS will finally return this weekend with several interesting games between Saturday and Sunday. Despite the Copa America Centenerio hiatus, however, teams were still making moves and analyzing the transfer market trying to find the best way to improve the squad considering the transfer window will open during July.
Here are some of the hottest transfer rumors around MLS over the past week.
12. Atlanta United FC targeting an Argentinean attacker?
Héctor Villalba is one of the most interesting prospects in the Argentinean league, and he's likely to move to Europe sooner than later considering his talent and the fact he's only 21 years old. The San Lorenzo attacker, however, could be close to move to MLS since expansion-side Atlanta United FC has enquired about him. ¿Could Atlanta sign him as one of their top players for the 2017 campaign?
11. Emil Larsen looking to abandon Columbus Crew SC
Emil Larsen signed for Columbus Crew at the beginning of the season, but the 24-year-old hasn't been able to adjust to life on the States and he's reportedly looking to end his contract to return back home. The left winger has only made three MLS appearances this year and has seen a grand total of 31 minutes of action, so it's safe to say Columbus isn't losing an important player if he decides to leave.
10. Boca Juniors continues to make a push for Lucas Melano
Boca Juniors continues to make a push to sign Portland's winger Lucas Melano. Portland is reluctant to sell his prized asset, but Melano has reportedly asked for 72 hours to convince the Timbers' management to allow him to move back to his native Argentina. Will Melano get what he wants?
9. Adebayo Akinfenwa eyeing MLS move?
The Wimbledon striker is known for his imposing physical presence, but most fans tend to forget how talented he is. The 5-foot-9, 224-pound striker has repeatedly said he's happy in England but things might change in the near future, as Seattle is apparently trying to sign him as soon as the transfer window opens in July. Will he arrive to MLS?
8. Seattle Sounders interested in San Lorenzo playmaker
The Sounders have been one of the most active teams on the market, something that shouldn't surprise anyone considering their position in the standings. Sigi Schmid has been looking for an attacking midfielder that would allow him to move Clint Dempsey to his natural role on the wing, and after striking out on the pursue of Nicolás Lodeiro, now Seattle is reportedly interested in Sebastián Blanco, a 28-year-old playmaker currently contracted to San Lorenzo in the Argentinean Primera Division.
7. Dever Orgill generating MLS interest
Dever Orgill was part of the Jamaican National Team that played in the 2016 Copa America Centenario, but he struggled to make an impact for the Reggae Boyz. Orgill, however, caught the eye of several MLS scouts, and three teams were reportedly in attendance to watch him closely during Jamaica's game against Uruguay. Several offers could come his way sooner than later.
6. Haiti attacker on a trial with New York Red Bulls
The New York Red Bulls have one of the best attackers in the entire league in the form of Bradley Wright-Phillips, but there's not a lot of depth in case the Englishman gets injured or suspended. Looking to increase the squad depth, NYRB has brought 22-year-old Christiano François on a trial. François last played for Felgueiras in Portugal's second division.
5. Octavio Rivero set to leave Vancouver Whitecaps?
Octavio Rivero was one of the Vancouver Whitecaps' best players when he arrived to the team before the start of the 2015 season, but he hasn't been able to repeat that same performance in 2016 and there are reports indicating he might be leaving in the near future. He's generating interest in his native country as both Peñarol and Nacional are making a push to secure his services.
4. Philadelphia Union won't sell Andre Blake...
There was a lot of talk about Andre Blake possibly making a move overseas after his great performance in the 2016 Copa America Centenario with Jamaica, but Philadelphia Union has ruled out any possibility of a transfer right now saying Blake "isn't going anywhere." It makes perfect sense to maintain Blake on the team since Philadelphia is at the top of the Eastern Conference.
3. ...but they have reportedly released Vincent Nogueira
Continuing the news in Philadelphia, one player who reportedly left the team is 28-year-old midfielder Vincent Nogueira. The box-to-box midfielder has had several health issues over the past few months, and he's decided to return to his country. There are no news about where he will play next.
2. DC United interested in a Costa Rican striker
According to reports, DC United has made an effort to Alajuelense in an attempt to sign Costa Rican striker Jonathan McDonald, but they are not the only MLS team interested in the 28-year-old forward. FC Dallas has also kept a close tab on the forward in the last few days, especially after McDonald said he was "anxious" to join an MLS team this year. Which team will eventually land him?
1. Andrés Guardado spoke about his chances to join Atlanta United FC
Andres Guardado is, apparently, getting closer to join Atlanta United FC. The Mexican is apparently leaning towards joining the expansion side in 2017, and he didn't rule out a move when asked about it by several pundits in Mexico's training camp during the Copa America: "MLS is growing a lot, and they are signing younger and better players each day. We'll see what happens in the future, but knowing a team wants you is always flattering."
