Some MLS sides will began their journey competing in three tournaments this week with the start of the US Open Cup (or the end of the Canadian Championship, in the case of Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps) and the return of MLS, in which teams are fighting for both the MLS Cup and the Supporters' Shield. Considering the teams that will take part in all three tournaments, here's a list of the four top candidates capable of winning all three competitions during the present campaign.
4. New York Red Bulls
The New York Red Bulls are one of the hottest teams in MLS of late, coming off three straight wins and with players like Bradley Wright-Phillips and Sacha Kljestan absolutely on fire. It remains to be seen if they'll be able to maintain this level of performance throughout the entire season, but if they do, the rest of the league will have a tough time beating them.
3. Vancouver Whitecaps
The Vancouver Whitecaps only have to defeat Toronto FC to take home the Canadian Championship, thus completing the first trophy of the three. The Canadian side has enough firepower to match up with any team in MLS so a title run for them isn't unlikely, and we all know anything can happen once the playoffs arrive.
2. Philadelphia Union
The Philadelphia Union are currently at the top of the Eastern Conference and while they don't have the most attractive playing style, they are getting things done, which is all that matters in the end. The experience of players like Tranquillo Barnetta will be key for their success, and they also have one of the best young keepers in MLS in André Blake... unless the team decides to sell him to Europe considering how good he was in the 2016 Copa America Centenario with Jamaica.
1. FC Dallas
As things stand right now, FC Dallas is the biggest threat to win all three North American trophies at the end of the season. Oscar Pareja's team is at the top of the Western Conference standings and they are one of the favorites to win the U.S. Open Cup. In addition, they are also one of the better-equipped teams to make a deep run on the playoffs considering how their roster is constructed. They are certainly a team to watch throughout the rest of the year.
