Twitter has revolutionised the transfer window irreversibly, giving fans the chance to contact their clubs directly and pester them into signing their desired target.

However, German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan took the unprecedented step of tweeting his new club Manchester City, urging them to "Announce Gundogan", on Thursday morning.

City duly obliged, officially confirming their capture of the former Borussia Dortmund man on a four-year contract.

The account also went on to post a welcome message from City's newest signing, in which Gundogan references the large number of tweets he has received in recent weeks, from impatient City fans tantalised by his imminent arrival.

In his first address to his new fanbase, Gundogan said, "Hello City fans, you have been tweeting me for a long time, and now I officially announce that I am a Manchester City player."

Gundogan appears set to become a popular figure at the Etihad Stadium, more so having also shunned a move to City's bitter rivals Manchester United on multiple occasions.
