Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson would return to the club this season if Louis van Gaal was sacked, according to a report in the Mirror.

Various sources have claimed that a bad result against Liverpool could mean the end of Van Gaal's United career, and Ferguson would allegedly be open to a sensational return to Old Trafford in an advisory role to Ryan Giggs.

Steve Bates believes that Sir Alex has no desire to work on the touchline again, but is willing to help the club behind the scenes if Ryan Giggs were to take the top job.

Ferguson, who managed the club for 26 years, would be an invaluable asset back at the club, and would undoubtably give the team a massive lift, although it remains to be seen whether Van Gaal will be given the boot at this stage of the season with so much football left to play.

Since retiring, the former Aberdeen boss has been acting as an ambassador for the club, attending most matches at Old Trafford, but has played no part in any key decision making at the club.

Although he has previously vowed to never overturn his retirement, Bates believes he would find it hard to refuse a temporary role back at the club in order to help them finish in the top four this season.

Even if he was working behind the scenes, United fans would surely still be over the moon to have the Scot back in any capacity.
