Manchester United are close to securing a deal for young Italian defender Luca Ercolani from Serie D side Forli, according to the Daily Mail.

The 16-year-old has been scouted by David Williams who also brought Giuseppe Rossi and Federico Macheda to the club. Ercolani has been on trial in Manchester for the past two months and it now appears United have decided to sign him.

Ercolani, who plays in central defence has been tracked by United for a while and reportedly had a trial at Carrington two summers ago. With the player is under the age of 23, a compensation figure will be decided by FIFA.

The Italy Under 16 international will no doubt be hoping he does not suffer a similar fate to that of Macheda and Rossi at his new club, as both failed to fully integrate into the first team despite showing promise at youth level.

Though no official announcement has been made, Ercolani failed to hide his excitement with a number of Instagram posts showing himself in Manchester - though his account has now been made private.
