Manchester United are on the brink of making their first signing of the January transfer window, with Sport Mediaset reporting that they're just hours away from completing a £16m deal for Dynamo Kiev centre-back Aleksandar Dragovic.

It's not the first time there have been rumours of an Old Trafford switch for the Austria international, with reports suggesting that a move was close to being completed 12 months ago - but United left that particular transfer window having added only Victor Valdes to their squad.

Louis van Gaal's defence has begun to show its lack of depth over the last six weeks, and the 24-year-old could slot neatly into the back line at Old Trafford alongside Chris Smalling, allowing Van Gaal to ease up on the use of makeshift defenders like his Dutch countryman Daley Blind, who has been shown up in the position more than once this season.

Dragovic has a history of success wherever he's gone, winning the Austrian cup at his first club before moving to Basel, where he helped the club to three consecutive Swiss Super League titles and a Swiss Cup before moving to Kiev and immediately getting involved - winning the Ukrainian Cup in both of his seasons at the club and the Ukrainian Premier League last season.

The Sport Mediaset claims that the transfer would be completed 'in the coming hours', though, appears to have been slightly off, with the report emerging nearly 24 hours ago. While they'd still technically be right if the move went through at any given point in the future - even 9245 hours are still "the coming hours" - they'd have missed the mark in spirit. Keep a close eye out.
