6 Classic Clashes Between Liverpool and Arsenal

Liverpool and Arsenal go head to head in the Premier League at Anfield on Wednesday night, but this pair of English giants have had some truly memorable meetings in recent history alone, so here's a look at six of the best...

6. Liverpool 3-6 Arsenal, 9th January 2007

One of the few things Julio Baptista ever did in an Arsenal shirt was score four times against Liverpool in a nine-goal League Cup thriller. The Brazilian was on loan from Real Madrid at the time and scored a hat-trick in a 20 minute window either side of half-time to put the Gunners out of sight, adding his fourth, the team's sixth, in the closing stages.

5. Liverpool 4-2 Arsenal, 8th April 2008

A place in the Champions League semi-finals was at stake when Arsenal travelled to Anfield in April 2008. The first leg had ended in a 1-1 draw in north London and a late strike from Emmanuel Adebayor looked like it was going to put the Gunners through on away goals. But Steven Gerrard put the tie back in Liverpool's favour just two minutes later, with Ryan Babel sealing the win at the death.

4. Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal, 28th November 2004

Still reeling from seeing their unbeaten run end at 49 games against Manchester United a few weeks earlier, Arsenal were stunned by a late goal from brief Kop hero Neil Mellor back in the autumn of 2004. The game was finely balanced after goals from Xabi Alonso and Patrick Vieira, before Mellor smashed home a last gasp stunner out of the blue.

3. Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal, 21st April 2009

A little like Julio Baptista, Andrei Arshavin was ultimately disappointing in an Arsenal shirt, but he also marked his Gunners career with an astonishing four goal-haul against Liverpool. It was an epic Anfield thriller that seriously dented Liverpool's title hopes, with the Russian's late fourth goal the pick of the bunch. Only an even later equaliser from Yossi Benayoun ensured the Reds still came away with a point.

2. Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal, 8th February 2014

Liverpool's absolute demolition of Arsenal in February 2014 was one of the first signs that the Reds were genuine Premier League title challengers. Inspired by Luis Suarez, who ironically didn't actually score on the day, as well as an early brace from Martin Skrtel, Brendan Rodgers' side simply blew their opponents away from the very first whistle and were 4-0 up inside 20 minutes.

1. Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal, 26th May 1989

There have been some high scoring thrillers between Liverpool and Arsenal in recent years, but no game between the two giants has ever been as important as the title showdown that took place at Anfield in 1989. With the Gunners only leading 1-0 in stoppage time, the Reds were seconds away from being crowned champions. But then Michael Thomas scored THAT goal, still one of the most famous in English football history.
