Newcastle United have formally completed their first signing of the January transfer window as Senegal international midfielder Henri Saivet arrives from Bordeaux. The 25-year-old is believed to have cost around £5m and has agreed a long-term contract until 2021.

Saivet, who had been at Bordeaux since 2002 when he joined the club's youth ranks at the age of just 12, underwent a successful medical in the north east earlier this afternoon.

Speaking to NUFC.co.uk about the news, the player said, "I am very happy to be here at Newcastle. I am really proud to be able to play for this club, and I am really excited at the challenge that lies ahead."

On his new surroundings, he added, "St. James' Park is a really impressive and special stadium. In France there is nothing that compares to this, and I can't wait to get out there with my new teammates and help the team climb the table."

Having been the one to initially confirm that Saivet would soon be signing, Magpies head coach Steve McClaren commented, "Henri is someone the club have been watching for a while, and he has developed into an excellent player at Bordeaux.

He added, "This is someone with a very good mentality, who is a tough player and a winner. Those are key qualities you need in the Premier League and we are looking forward to seeing him pulling on the Newcastle United shirt."

While he may not fill the fan demands for striker and defenders, Saivet will add depth to an already talented midfield unit alongside Georginio Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko.

He played 18 of Bordeaux's 20 Ligue 1 games this season prior to his switch to England, captaining the side on occasion. He also featured in five out of six Europa League games, including a top class performance against Liverpool at Anfield in November.

Saivet will also bring versatility to Newcastle, having operated in a deep lying midfield role, a more conventional central position, as well as both on the right and on the left already in 2015/16.
