After the Espanyol Stunner, Here's a Look at Lionel Messi's Best Ever Free-Kicks

Lionel Messi is widely recognised as the greatest player in history and it is not hard to see why.

In Barcelona's 4-1 victory over Espanyol in the last-16 first leg of the Copa del Rey, Lionel Messi scored a stunning free kick to show that he really can do everything.

Here are seven of the Argentine's best ever free kicks...

7. Barcelona 4-1 Espanyol - January 6, 2016

Messi's most recent example of his brilliance, the free-kick against Espanyol was simply magnificent.

With Barcelona having come from behind to draw level - through Messi - the Argentine stepped up to take a 25-yard free-kick.

Pau Lopez in the Espanyol goal had no chance as the ball rocketed in via the underside of the bar to put Barca ahead.

6. Argentina 3-0 Uruguay - October 12, 2012

Being able to score a free kick is one thing. Being able to score an under-the-wall free kick shows a new level of skill.

Very few have managed to perfect the skill of keeping the ball low to go under the jumping wall whilst maintaining the power to be the goalkeeper, but Messi is one of them.

In a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay, the Argentina captain expertly crept his free kick under the wall and into the bottom corner of the net to help his side to a 3-0 win.

5. Barcelona 2-2 Real Madrid - October 7, 2012

In El Clasico matches, there is often a focus on Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo as fans debate who is better.

Messi staked his claim as the best with a stunning free kick from 25-yards that just beat the wall before curling into the top corner past one of the best goalkeepers in the world - Iker Casillas.

4. Argentina 3-1 Paraguay - September 7, 2012

In another crucial World Cup qualifier, Messi helped his Argentina side move top of their group with a stunning free kick in their win over Paraguay.

With the Albiceleste 2-1 up, Lionel Messi put the result beyond doubt with an exquisite free kick.

Roughly 30 yards out, Messi's free kick beat both the wall and the goalkeeper to nestle into the back of the net via the right post.

3. Barcelona 2-2 Deportivo La Coruna - December 12, 2015

Barcelona have been marching through La Liga this season but there have been some blips, including losing a 2-0 lead against Deportivo.

However, the game may be remembered more for another brilliant Messi free kick.

After missing much of the season through injury, the Argentine stepped up from 30 yards to curl the ball into the top right-hand corner and give Barca the lead.

2. Real Madrid 2-1 Barcelona - August 29, 2012

In the second-leg of the Super Cup, Barcelona went into the game against Real Madrid holding a 3-2 aggregate lead. However, they found themselves 2-0 down after just 19 minutes.

However, just before half time Messi gave Barca a fighting chance with a breathtaking free kick that beat Casillas.

The Argentine bent the ball around the wall and past the outstretched hand of Casillas into the back of the net. Though it was just a consolation as Madrid won on away goals.

1. Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona - February 26, 2012

Arguably Messi's best ever free-kick was a mixture of quick-thinking and skill.

In a tough game against Atletico Madrid with the score at 1-1, Barcelona were awarded a free kick out wide with just 10 minutes left. Messi and Xavi stood over the ball with many expecting the right foot of Xavi to cross.

However, Messi - with his left foot - powered the ball over the head of Thibaut Courtois, who was still arranging his wall, into the top right-hand corner to hand Barca all three points
