The Most Valuable Starting XI in European Football

The CIES Football Observatory has published its annual report of the world's most valuable players based on its exclusive algorithm and from the statistics, the most valuable starting line up in Europe can now be revealed...

11. Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois

Value: €47m

Unsurprisingly, the most valuable goalkeeper in Europe is Chelsea stopper Thibaut Courtois, who at 23 years old, could still have another 15 years left in the top flight.

Despite his tender age, the Belgian international already has league winner medals from both La Liga and the Premier League and a Champions League final appearance under his belt.

10. Centre Back: Raphael Varane

Value: €48.5m

The most valuable defender on the continent is another player that is destined for great things, Real Madrid centre back Raphael Varane. The French international defender is still young, but has already shown the type of quality that will make him the most revered centre-back on the planet.

9. Centre Back: Nicolas Otamendi

Value: €40.6m

Joining Varane in a three man defence is Manchester City hard man Nicolas Otamendi. The Argentinian international is undergoing his first season in the Premier League and despite the Citizens' inconsistencies this year, the former Valencia man has impressed greatly and may still contribute to what could be a victorious campaign.

8. Centre Back: Jerome Boateng

Value: €38.5m

Pipping his Bayern Munich teammate David Alaba by half a million Euros, Jerome Boateng is still considered one of the best defenders in the German Bundesliga, despite being humiliated by Leo Messi in last season's Champions League semi final first leg. The former Manchester City man also tasted World Cup success in 2014.

7. Right Midfield: Kevin De Bruyne

Value: €73m

On the right of a four man midfield is Manchester City's record signing, Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian winger cost the Citizens £55m over the summer and he has already shown a glimpse as to why, in what is his second spell in the Premier League.

6. Central Midfield: Paul Pogba

Value: €77.3m

By far the most valuable central midfielder in Europe, Pogba is undoubtedly set for what could be a world record breaking move whenever he does decide to leave Juventus. The French star has led the Old Lady to unprecedented success but a move to La Liga or the Premier League is heavily speculated.

5. Central Midfield: Isco

Value: €62.1m

Isco pips the likes of compatriot Cesc Fabregas, teammate Toni Kroos and PSG's Marco Verratti to a place alongside Pogba in central midfield. The Real Madrid star is often on the bench for Los Blancos but his value in world football is huge.

4. Left Midfield: Raheem Sterling

Value: €89.8m

He just about passes as a left winger so Raheem Sterling slots into the team ahead of such stars as Philippe Coutinho, Mesut Ozil and James Rodriguez. The England international became the most expensive Englishman of all time when City shelled out £50m for him from Liverpool last summer.

3. Right Forward: Eden Hazard

Value: €130.5m

Onto the forward positions and Eden Hazard takes up his role on the right, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been valued at  €114m. The Belgian star is considered the third most valuable player in the world according to these statistics, although Chelsea fans haven't seen much of that this season.

2. Centre Forward: Harry Kane

Value: €91.3m

In terms of out and out strikers, Harry Kane is the most valuable in the world. He has beaten off competition from Luis Suarez (€86.3m), Sergio Aguero (€82.1m) and Anthony Martial (€77.8m) to the honour. The Spurs front man has continued his blistering form from his breakthrough season last year.

1. Left Forward: Lionel Messi

Value: €250.7m

The most valuable player on the planet is obviously Leo Messi and he is worth almost €100m more that the second, Neymar, who misses out on this XI due to the Argentinian's inclusion in the team. Messi has won everything there is to win at club level with FC Barcelona and is showing no signs of slowing down.
