Roma pulled off quite a transfer coup earlier in the year by completing the signing of Argentine wonderkid Ezequiel Ponce, dubbed the 'new Batisuta' in his homeland.
The Italians beat Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur to his signature, with Newell's Old Boys club president Guillermo Lorente confirming on Talksport that the Lilywhites made an approach.
Spurs’ head coach Mauricio Pochettino played for Newell’s Old Boys during his career and reports suggested that his links with the club could persuade the youngster to move to the Premier League.
But Ponce chose the Italian capital and, although he hasn’t featured for the first team so far this season, he impressed in the under-19 team in the UEFA Youth League by providing three goals and four assists in his opening four games, including a fantastic brace in a 3-3 draw against Barcelona.
However, Roma confirmed via their official website yesterday that Ponce has undergone surgery after damaging his knee ligaments.
He suffered the injury in the match against Barcelona, despite completing the full 90 minutes, and the operation has been to rebuild the anterior ligaments in his right knee.
The blistering start made by Ponce looked to have justified his choice of transfer destination, but this cruel twist of fate may have ruled the youngster out of action until next season.
