Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender finds himself linked with a move away from the Westfalenstadion this summer, with Premier League duo Tottenham and Southampton reportedly leading the chase for his signature.

He’s been coveted by a host of European clubs for some time, with Arsenal previously credited with interest, report the Daily Mail.

Bender is a defensive midfielder, who is diligent with his duties in protecting the backline. He puts his body on the line multiple times in games to ensure key passes from the opposing side aren’t completed, and will throw himself into challenges to stop shots coming in. The German international perhaps spends more time on the deck than on his feet, but he’s been a key player in the Dortmund side for the last five years.

He made 20 Bundesliga appearances last season, averaging a tackle or interception every 15 minutes.

Bender needs some work on his ball retention, completing only 79% of his passes, but his combative attributes are very impressive, with the midfielder winning 56% of his aerial duels.

It’s little wonder why Tottenham and Southampton are keen given he offers the midfield substance that saw Dortmund win back-to-back Bundesliga titles in the past, and has made more than 180 appearances in his time with the German outfit. He doesn’t chip in with many goals, but his job is to protect, and he won’t deviate from his position just to try and get a chance away a goal.

Bender is level-headed too, picking up just 19 yellow cards in his six years at Dortmund, and has never been sent off in his senior career. Representing his country has been difficult for him, however, with so much competition in the middle of the park for a starting place, but a move elsewhere could potentially reinvigorate his international career.
