Goals are what drive us in football and incredible goals are moments of magic that we live for.
You can think that all hope is gone, that the player has taken it too wide or wasted the chance, but somehow football will find a way of surprising you.
Brace yourself, because here are 12 of the best goals ever scored from impossible angles, that will leave you scratching your head in amazement.
12. Roberto Carlos
One of the most famous impossible goals has to be Roberto Carlos' after this incredible effort.
The Brazilian was known for scoring some special ones in his time, but this is just something else and almost defies the laws of physics.
Latching on to an overhit pass, the chance looks to be gone, but somehow Carlos gets there and hits it first time, swerving it towards the net and absolutely bamboozling the goalkeeper.
11. Sergio Aguero
Sergio Aguero saved his side with this effort against Liverpool.
The Argentinian caught onto a long ball forward, but fortunately for him Pepe Reina had also run out to contest it.
Aguero got there first and rounded the Liverpool goalkeeper at an angle, before slotting the ball home and leaving the Reds' defence hopeless to stop his effort.
10. Frank Lampard
Not only did this look a lost cause for the goal, but the match was also beginning to look a lost cause for Chelsea before Lampard netted this goal.
The Blues were trailing to Barcelona in the Champions League before Lampard picked up the ball and was taken wide of the goal.
He looked to have lost his chance, but with his back to goal, he then turned and delivered this sublime effort to level the score.
This goal has gone down as one of the best in the midfielder's Chelsea career and is a great example of why he is one of the greatest footballers of his generation.
9. Blas Perez
This next goal comes from the MLS and whilst it has a lot of skill involved, this may have been a bit lucky to have come off.
FC Dallas have the ball from a throw-in at the top of the pitch in their opponents' half, before Blas Perez latches onto the ball.
Whilst most players would have looked to win a corner or keep possession from this angle, Perez had an other ideas.
Whether this was a shot or a mis-hit cross, what came next was certainly incredible.
8. Gerso Fernandes
This kid had some nerve even attempting this shot, let alone scoring an absolute wonder of a goal.
Gerso Fernandes made something out of nothing when he picked up the ball in the box and had his back to goal, trying to shield the ball from the defender.
He then flicked the ball up and volleyed it over his head and into the goal, going down in history as one of football's impossible goals.
7. Fernando Guerrero
This next goal just doesn't make sense with regards to how Fernando Guerrero scores from this position.
The Independiente del Valle player grabbed the ball near the corner flag and let fly this ambitious attempt during a Primera Categoria Serie A match in Ecuador.
The result was this incredible and baffling goal.
6. Nacer Chadli
This game against Stoke was probably one to forget for Tottenham, but the goal from Chadli was certainly something to remember.
Mauricio Pochettino's side were trailing 2-0 at home when the Belgian popped up the blast home a volley from an incredibly tight angle.
Spurs would go on to lose the match, but Chadli's goal was certainly something special even if he could not turn the tide for his team.
5. Obafemi Martins
Everybody loves a good chipped goal, but how about a chip from a seemingly impossible angle?
Well that's exactly what Obafemi Martins produced for the Seattle Sounders in this MLS match.
The Nigerian opened the scoring for his side in the eighth minute when he raced onto a pass and lobbed the goalkeeper from the touchline, all in one swift movement.
Ronaldinho has scored some momentous goals throughout his career, including this one from a corner-kick!
The Brazilian takes the set-piece from a zero degree angle and somehow curls it into the net.
At first glance, it looks as if his team-mate heads the ball in, but it turns out that Ronaldinho really is that good.
If you can remember back to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, then you'll probably recall this Maicon effort.
The Brazilian defender scored the first goal of the tournament for his nation and it was certainly one to remember.
An overlapping run sees Maicon catch up to the ball just at the touchline, before he unleashes a rocket towards goal, which absolutely stuns the goalkeeper at the near post.
2. Thiago Silva
Whilst this is not technically a goal, it is still incredible and amazing how Silva managed to find the net with this effort.
PSG were on course for their first Ligue 1 title since 1994 and were 3-0 up against Nice, but one player would have been hoping it was four.
The Brazilian defender ran onto a Zlatan Ibrahimovic pass and just as the ball looked as if it was going for a goal kick, Thiago Silva somehow fired it into the net.
Unfortunately for him the ball was judged to have crossed the line, which in fact makes this 'goal' even more impossible.
1. Marco van Basten
Rounding this list off is one of the best goals ever scored from Marco van Basten.
The Dutchman made history when he ran into the box to volley home this memorable goal against the USSR in the 1988 European Championships.
It was a magnificent effort which left the entire stadium shocked as to how he fired this rocket past the goalkeeper and into the net from the angle to make football history.
