Barcelona legend, Xavi Hernandez has opened up on his former club and their talisman, Lionel Messi - believing that the Catalan giants have failed to take the full advantage of having the greatest player in the history of the game at the club.
While Barcelona have done well domestically in recent times, they have struggled in the Champions League, having last won the title in 2015 and ended last season as the first one in 12 years where they failed to win a single trophy.
Messi ended up asking to leave last summer and Xavi has urged his former club to do their best to make the captain happy again at the Camp Nou.
"I’m sorry that we have not taken enough advantage of Messi in recent years. Many times it has made me feel that Leo has not been happy on the pitch and I’m sorry as a culer that we have not taken enough advantage of having the best player of the world and of history," he told TV3.
“We have make Leo happy because with a happy Leo you have a lot more chances to win titles. That he hasn’t felt happy in what I consider the club of my life makes me sad.”
It is still not clear as to what decision Messi decides to take in the summer, but there is growing optimism in the club circles following the election of Joan Laporta as president, considering that he shares a good relationship with the Argentinian and is reportedly pulling out all stops to ensure that the record six-time Ballon d'Or award winner remains with them for the foreseeable future.
