Barcelona legend Xavi has hit out at his former club for not taking the full advantage of having the greatest player in history, Lionel Messi, at Camp Nou.
Messi, who put in a transfer request last summer, has been linked with a move to Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, as he continues to contemplate his future. And Xavi, who won the treble in 2015 before leaving the club, has admitted that his former team-mate has looked "sad" at times this season, and that the club have "failed him".
"You have to make sure that Leo is happy, because with a happy and content Leo you have a better chance to win titles," he said during an interview with TV3.
"Many times he has given me the impression that Leo has not been happy on the field, that he has been sad and it makes me sad as a Cule that we have not taken advantage of him enough in recent years. We had the best footballer in the world and in history and we haven't taken advantage of him enough."
Recent reports claimed that PSG have offered Messi a three-year contract once his current deal expires at the end of the current season, but Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman insisted that he is not worried his club captain could leave. "I'm not interested in PSG, I don't know if it's true," Koeman said regarding the rumours.
"I hope he stays with us. For me, he should finish here because he's spent his whole life here, but ultimately it's a decision that he will have to make. It doesn't worry me at all, I'm just focused on winning."
