Manchester United pulled off one of the best deals of the summer when they announced they have reached an agreement in principle with Real Madrid over the transfer of defender Raphael Varane.
Varane is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world, and his arrival will certainly strengthen the Man Utd backline, with the 28-year-old set to partner Harry Maguire in the heart of the club's defence.
Here, we take a look at what AS Roma coach and former Man Utd manager Jose Mourinho, and Juventus superstar and former Red Devils attacker Cristiano Ronaldo have said about Varane, who will become the club's third signing of the summer.
"I think Varane is the best central-defender in the world. He is still young, but I think he's the best," Mourinho said back in 2014 about Varane, who he had previously coached at Real Madrid.
"Already, yes. I think he's the best defender."
"Varane is now learning a lot. He has grown as a player and as a man," Ronaldo told AS about his then teammate in 2013.
"He is quick, he has good composure and he is very calm.
"He is accumulating experience at his young age. He is humble and, for me, in a few years will be one of the best central defenders in the world.
"I have no doubt about it."
