Former France and Arsenal midfielder, Emmanuel Petit has become the latest legend to criticise Argentina icon, Lionel Messi due to his performances for Paris Saint-Germain, claiming, "We have been witnessing the death of one king and the rise of another".

Messi has struggled to recapture the form he showed while at Barcelona following his move to PSG in the summer, with the striker managing to score just seven goals in 22 appearances in all competitions so far.

The 34-year-old has been overshadowed by Kylian Mbappe on the pitch and Petit believes that the world is witnessing the rise of another legend.

“I feel genuine pain when I watch Messi on the pitch. We all want him to succeed, to take our hand and tell us a story like he told thousands in Barcelona. I don’t want to pit Messi against Mbappé. But for several months, we have been witnessing the death of one king and the rise of another," he told RMC Sport.

“I know that this guy has an oversized ego, but at some point, he will have to understand that as long as he is not well, especially mentally, he will not be able to become the Messi of Barça again. I hope that by the end of the season, we will be able to see the great Messi intermittently, but over time it is no longer possible.”

Despite Messi's struggles on the pitch, PSG are well on course to win yet another Ligue 1 title and hold a slight advantage over Real Madrid in order to qualify for the quarter-final of the Champions League.
