Famous television network Viacom18 has reportedly won the media telecast rights for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar in an eye-watering 450 crore deal ($60m).
This means that the network has beaten the likes of broadcast giants like Sony, Star and others to claim this incredible deal.
With the time difference between Qatar and India not being much, it is expected that Viacom18 will gain maximum viewership from the epic tournament next year.
Till 2010, Star Sports Network had the rights for the FIFA World Cup broadcast before Sony came in for the 2014 and 2018 World Cups respectively.
Sony got the rights for two tournaments to the value of $80m.
Earlier, Viacom18 also acquired rights to LaLiga, Serie A and Ligue1 as well as Abu Dhabi T10 league in last few months and a new channel for sports is not being ruled out.
Recently, former Star Sports Sales head Anil Jayraj was hired as Viacom18's CEO and there is no doubt that his presence and persistence led to possibly the beginning of a shift in India's dynamics of watching sports on television.
The World Cup is all set to be held in the winter of 2022, with the grand tournament kicking off on November 21, 2022 and ending on December 18, 2022.
