The 2020-21 season came to an incredible close with Chelsea beating Manchester City to claim the UEFA Champions League crown for a second time.

During the whole of last season, we saw some incredible performances from many players, not only from Chelsea and Manchester City, but also from other top clubs.

We, at 90min India and our colleagues from Thailand and Indonesia discussed the whole tournament at length and came up with our best XI of the Champions League season right from the group stages till the final. The selection of these players is based on their incredible performances right up till the moment their teams were in the competition.

Here's how we line-up:

1. Goalkeeper: Edouard Mendy - Chelsea

Edouard Mendy was selected in this XI after keeping a record-equalling nine clean sheets throughout the duration of the Champions League.

While Chelsea's defence was pretty solid, whenever Mendy was called upon, he came up with incredible saves for his side.

2. Right-back: Kyle Walker - Manchester City

Walker was one of the main stars for City on their road to the final. The right-back played various roles for them during their campaign as he featured in 11 games, played 982 minutes and covered 101,384 metres throughout the duration of the Champions League. His contribution in attack and solidity in defence are testament to his spot in our XI.

3. Centre-back: Ruben Dias - Manchester City

Dias has been one of the best defenders in Europe this season. The City star played 11 games in the Champions League this season and covered a staggering 111,893 metres throughout the tournament. Dias has added an unbreakable wall in front of City's defence and is one of the major reasons why Guardiola's side kept some tricky sides at bay.

4. Centre-back: Marquinhos - PSG

To partner Ruben Dias in defence, we have PSG's leader in defence, Marquinhos.

The Brazilian was staggering throughout the season as he featured in 10 matches for the Parisians, playing 817 minutes in total, covering 90,341 metres in total.

As a centre-back, Marquinhos gets into this team as he came up with three absolutely crucial goals for PSG throughout their run in the Champions League.

5. Left-back: Zaidu Sanusi - FC Porto

Porto defender Sanusi is the surprise pick made by us for the left-back position.

While we are sure his performances went under the radar, his performance alongside Pepe against Juventus alone makes him worthy of a spot in our best Champions League XI of the season.

Sanusi played 10 games and a total of 868 minutes in the tournament and scored one goal in Porto's surprising campaign.

6. Central defensive midfielder: N'Golo Kante - Chelsea

Words are not enough as to how talented this Chelsea midfielder is.

Kante is the reason why the Blues are Champions League winners this season.

The French midfielder literally owned the field in the final against Manchester City.

Throughout the Champions League season, Kante played 709 minutes, covered a distance of 93,135 metres and came up with incredible man of the match performances in almost all games against Porto, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and in the final against Manchester City.

7. Right central midfielder: Toni Kroos - Real Madrid

Real Madrid talisman Toni Kroos was once again brilliant in midfield throughout the Champions League 2020-21 season.

He played 12 games, covered a distance of 119,459 metres and played a total of 961 minutes as Los Blancos came up with a decent run in the competition.

His performances in the knockout rounds was especially hailed by fans.

8. Left central midfielder: Kevin De Bruyne - Manchester City

Kevin De Bruyne was absolutely incredible for Manchester City throughout their run till the Champions League final.

It was extremely unfortunate that he got injured in the final but until then, the Belgian impacted every single game for City on their road towards promised land of the Champions League trophy.

De Bruyne played eight games in the Champions League this season and positively impacted almost all those matches through his passes, assists and goals.

9. Right Forward: Kylian Mbappe - PSG

PSG hitman Kylian Mbappe was at his absolute best for most of the 2020-21 Champions League.

The Frenchman came up with critically important performances for the Parisians who were favourites right up until the semi-final.

Despite facing multiple fitness issues, Mbappe laboured on and gave his 100% throughout the tournament in which he scored eight goals and provided three assists in 10 games.

10. Left Forward: Karim Benzema - Real Madrid

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was in the form of his life in the 2020-21 season.

The French maestro deserves a spot in our XI because he came up with match winning moments multiple times for Real Madrid in the Champions League this season.

He scored six goals in the tournament and his performances also saw him earn a EURO 2020 berth for France after a long hiatus.

11. Centre Forward: Erling Haaland - Borussia Dortmund

Haaland was exceptional throughout Dortmund's run in the Champions League this season.

The Norwegian scored 10 goals and provided two assists in eight games in the 2020-21 tournament and his excellent goalscoring form is deserved of a spot in our XI.
