The summer transfer window is almost here and top clubs across Europe are gearing up for what could be a pretty interesting window in terms of spending, considering the ongoing COVID-19 crisis around the world.

However, some top clubs will surely conduct major business as usual this summer and for those who would look at chances to sign the best players at a cheaper cost, probably one that only includes paying their salary, we bring you 7 such footballers who would be available to sign for free this summer.

Note: The list is as of May 10, when none of these seven players had signed new contracts or announced their departure to a specific club.

1. Lionel Messi

Totally deserving to be on our number one spot is Barcelona legend Lionel Messi who has been heavily linked with a move away from Camp Nou in the summer.

Messi will definitely be the most in-demand and illustrious free transfer in history if he were to move out of Barcelona this summer.

2. Sergio Ramos

Heavily linked with a move to PSG, Sergio Ramos will see his contract end once the ongoing domestic season draws to a close.

Ramos revealed last month that he had not signed an extension. Reports indicate he needs a two year deal whereas Madrid are offering one.

With David Alaba arriving at Madrid, it is possible Ramos will be let go for free.

Manchester United, who have been used by Ramos in the past to get a new contract, may well still be in the picture along with PSG if a chance arises this summer.

Getting a serial winner for free will certainly benefit any club that signs him.

3. Edinson Cavani

Uruguayan legend Edinson Cavani came to Manchester United as a deadline day free signing last summer and he has proved everyone wrong with some incredible performances for the club.

United ensured that they kept an option to extend his deal by another season and it looks like Cavani might end up staying at Old Trafford in 2021-22.

4. Memphis Depay

Lyon star Memphis Depay has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona but they could not buy him considering their debt.

Depay has shone in Ligue 1 and has since attracted interest from the Blaugrana. The Dutchman has also attracted interest from Liverpool, who offer him a return to the Premier League.

With Depay free to take his decision, it will be interesting to see where he ends up this summer.

5. Sergio Aguero

Manchester City have confirmed Aguero will be leaving the club this summer when his contract ends.

This means he will leave the club for free and Premier League club Chelsea have shown interest in the Argentine.

There is also interest from Spain and France as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG are also said to be interested in one of the greatest Premier League strikers in history.

6. Hakan Calhanoglu

AC Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu has been linked with multiple clubs in the past with Manchester United being the club most heavily linked with the Turkish international.

The player is stuck in contract negotiations with Milan and it looks like a summer move is likely.

Manchester United and Napoli consider him favourable as a free agent this summer and are said to be making a move.

7. Jerome Boateng

Bayern centre-back Jerome Boateng could be on the move away from Germany after a decade with the Bavarians.

Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal are said to be showing keen interest in him. It is being felt that Boateng could have a similar impact at a club that Thiago Silva has had at Chelsea.
