Barcelona star, Gerard Pique has opened up on the speculation surrounding the future of club icon, Lionel Messi at the Nou Camp, revealing that, "there is hope that the record six-time Ballon d'Or award winner can be seduced into staying beyond the summer".
Messi shocked the footballing world earlier in the summer after he handed in a transfer request to leave the club, only to reverse his decision after both the club management and LaLiga authorities reiterated that he would only be able to leave if a club would meet his 700million release clause.
The striker was said to be unhappy with the Barcelona board and while Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned as the president, there is no guarantees that the new president would be able to convince him to stay, considering that they are in the process of slashing their wage bill.
Pique for his part is not giving up hope on his friend remaining at the club who he joined in 2001.
“We’ll have to ask Leo, I don’t know. We hope that we will stay. It’s a very personal decision and we’ll see. As long as he continues at Barca, there is hope, and we hope that he can be seduced into staying," he told Radio Marca.
Barcelona have endured one of their worst starts in their history in the league, with the club currently placed 13th with 11 points, 12 behind surprise leaders, Real Sociedad. They will look to get back to winning ways and move up the table when they face Osasuna on Sunday, 29 November.
