Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique has opened up on the departure of star player, Lionel Messi - revealing that the club's players are a "bit broken" following the news that the record six-time Ballon d'Or award winner will not continue at the Nou Camp.

Barcelona announced last week that Messi would be leaving the club after they were unable to offer him a new deal in order to comply with the salary cap set by the LaLiga authorities. The 34-year-old has spent his entire professional career at the Nou Camp, and Pique has admitted that his departure has come as a blow for the club's players.

"The team was a bit broken because of Messi's departure. We've lost the best player of all time. It has hurt us and it hurt him too. You aren't the same side in terms of talent and magic when the best player ever leaves. You lose an important attacking player, who gives you a lot of goals and assists, but you have to stay competitive," he said post their 3-0 win over Juventus in the Joan Gamper Trophy.

"It isn't one of the best days. You know that one day it has to happen, but it's affected the team. Particularly those of us who have been sharing a dressing room with him for years."

It will be interesting to see how the club manages without their greatest ever player, considering that he scored a staggering 672 goals in 778 appearances, helping the Catalan giants win 10 LaLiga titles, four Champions League and numerous other honours.
