Tennis superstar, Rafael Nadal has opened up on who he believes deserves to win the Ballon d'Or award this year, snubbing the likes of footballing superstars, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as his pick.
The Ballon d'Or award ceremony takes place on November 29 in Paris and while Messi is being touted as the favourite to win the honour, Nadal wants Real Madrid striker, Karim Benzema to be recognised for his performances.
“My admiration as a player, the commitment to sports and professionalism at his age. Good luck and my support for the 2021 Ballon d’Or goes to Benzema," he wrote on social networking site, Twitter.
Benzema has emerged as the talisman for Madrid ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in the summer of 2018 and is currently the club's top goalscorer this season, netting nine goals in nine games so far.
The Frenchman has also been in fine form for France and has now scored 35 goals for club and country since the turn of the year but is only fifth favourite to lift the Ballon d’Or next month. It will be interesting to see who eventually does pick up the honour, considering that Robert Lewandowski, Jorginho and Mohamed Salah also harbour realistic hopes of winning the award.
