Manchester United's summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo is said to have been in transfer talks with a shock move to La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the summer before his incredible return to Old Trafford.
Ronaldo dropped a bombshell with his exit from Juventus and almost joined Manchester City before the Red Devils came in and got their legend back home.
According to Cadena SER’s Carrusel Deportivo (as per The Daily Mirror), Ronaldo’s agent was in talks with Atletico and not Real Madrid.
However, the report goes on to confirm that Atletico Madrid's board turned down the idea of signing Ronaldo as they did not want to spoil their relations with their arch rivals Real Madrid.
They reportedly also felt Ronaldo would not have received a warm welcome from Atletico Madrid fans due to his past with Real.
The Madrid manager took to Twitter and stated, “Cristiano is a Real Madrid legend and he has all my love and respect. I have never considered signing him. We are looking forward.”
Meanwhile, Ronaldo has been in incredible goalscoring form since his return back to Manchester United. The Portuguese maestro scored a brace on his debut against Newcastle United before also netting against Young Boys.
He also scored for the Red Devils in their latest Premier League win at West Ham last weekend.
