Brazilian legend Rivaldo has stated that Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction to Bruno Fernandes' penalty miss against Aston Villa shows how humble the legendary number 7 is.

Manchester United got a chance to equalise with a last gasp penalty against Aston Villa on Saturday, but Fernandes skied the ball with his shot, which meant it was his fourth penalty miss in 42 attempts.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has missed 28 out of his 139 penalties for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus combined.

Speaking in his role as a Betfair ambassador, the 1999 Ballon d'Or winner said: "Bruno Fernandes missed a stoppage time penalty that led to a Manchester United's loss to Aston Villa, but he was right to take it, even though Cristiano Ronaldo was on the pitch.

"Last season, Fernandes was the designated penalty-taker - and he has a great record - and Ronaldo respected that on Saturday, proving that he is more humble than many people think.

"After the match, Fernandes apologised to fans and team-mates on social media, which is a good action, although not necessary.

"The most important thing now for United is that Solskjaer and both players decide who should take the penalties from now on. The Portuguese players are friends. I don't imagine they are going to fall out - and damage the team's unity - over who takes penalties."

The Red Devils are preparing to face Villarreal in an all-important UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday night after losing their opening game to BSC Young Boys.
