Karim Benzema has tested positive for Covid-19 following his return to training, Real Madrid have confirmed.

The LaLiga giants released a statement on Friday confirming the Frenchman returned a positive test and will miss Madrid's friendly with Rangers on Sunday.

The 33-year-old was on a break following France's shock Euro 2020 elimination to Switzerland in the last-16 on June 28.

"Real Madrid announce that our player Karim Benzema has tested positive for Covid-19," the club said in an official statement. However, the club have not revealed if the striker has symptoms or is asymptomatic.

Benzema will remain in isolation until he returns a negative test and could miss a significant portion of Madrid's pre-season. He is expected to play a major role for Carlo Ancelotti's side this season as they look to improve on last season.

Los Blancos finished second in the league, behind rivals Atletico, and were knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage by eventual winners Chelsea.
