Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained the reason behind Harry Maguire and Fred's angry exchange of words during Manchester United's 0-0 draw with Leeds United on Sunday.

The pair were heard involved in an x-rated spat in the second half over what appeared to be positioning. But in his post-match conference, Solskjaer brushed off the tiff, claiming that it was all a part of the "mentality" of his players, who always want to perform their best.

The United boss said: “We have got a group that demands a lot of each other. The standard is high, both on training and in a game, it is not just about being a nice guy.

“We demand maximum effort. I was really proud of how strong we looked. I never thought they threatened our goal in the second half but we missed a little bit of spark to win the game.”

According to the Mirror, Maguire reportedly appeared unhappy with Fred's positioning, and the center-back was heard calling the Brazilian midfielder a "f***ing idiot".

However, Solskjaer was happy with his side's performance, and added: "Compared to last season we have won more tight games, we have won more towards the end of games. I think our fitness has been really good and second half we looked strong, athletes, I really liked what I saw.

“Today we just didn’t have the moment, didn’t take them when we had them. A draw is disappointing because we wanted to put pressure on City.”

United now turn their attention back to the Europa League when they take on Roma in the first leg of their semi-final clash on Thursday.
