Nuno Espirito Santo has admitted he spoke with Harry Kane over his future and revealed that Tottenham are taking it "day by day".

Kane delayed his return to pre-season training following an extended vacation after Euro 2020, with many speculating it was a ploy to push a transfer through to Manchester City.

But Nuno said Kane missing from training was 'routine'. "That is your confusion," the Spurs boss said. "It is not our confusion. There was no confusion at all. He had to submit himself to the protocols of the quarantine.

"Harry joined the group today. He trained. We had a talk. Of course it’s a private conversation but everything is OK. He’s preparing himself like Bryan (Gil), (Cristian) Romero, players who joined us later. We have to be careful but everything is OK.

"He (Kane) is here with us. He’s a Tottenham player. He’s here with us. We have to think about tomorrow. Tomorrow. We go day by day. All the players who work with us are our players. Look we cannot control what’s happening outside the building, the news, the speculation, the rumours, all these things that surround us as a club.

"But we as a group of players we close ourselves. That’s the best way we have to prepare ourselves. Among us cannot be distractions. We are clear on what we have to do. We have a shield and we have to protect that shield as best we can."

He added that Spurs were expecting their opening match against City to be a hard one, and said: "We expect a tough match. A very tough match. Quality players, talented squad, so we expect a tough match."
