Newly elected FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed Lionel Messi has already congratulated him for winning the election.
Laporta came out on top against Victor Font and Toni Freixa with a convincing margin as he received more than 54% of the total votes.
One of the big tasks that await Laporta in his return to the role of the club president, having already held the position between 2003 and 2010, is to sort out Messi's future at the club.
The Argentine's contract with Barcelona expires at the end of the season, and he has been linked with a move away from the club at the end of the season.
However, Laporta is convinced Messi wants to stay at the club beyond the summer and promised they will soon decide his future.
He also revealed Messi congratulated him for the winning the election. "It was very nice to see Messi going to vote. It is yet more proof that he loves Barca," Laporta told Catalunya Radio [via Metro].
"I am convinced that he wants to stay. And, yes, he has already congratulated me for winning the election.
"He also won yesterday. We will soon have a quiet talk and decide his future."
