Lionel Messi sent Robert Lewandowski an extremely classy message following his Ballon d'Or victory on Monday night.

The Paris Saint-Germain star scooped up his seventh Ballon d'Or, with the Bayern Munich striker narrowly missing out, despite being a leading favourite to win the award.

Speaking at the ceremony, Messi made a massive statement commenting on the 2020 awards which were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"You deserve your Ballon D'Or," Messi said in his speech. "Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner."

"It has been an honour to compete with you Robert, and you deserve your golden ball. Hopefully France Football will give it to you, we all know that you should have won it last year and hopefully they will give it to you and you can have it at home."

Lewandowski, however, did not leave the night empty-handed and was given France Football's inaugural Striker of the Year award. In 42 club appearances in 2021 so far, he has scored 53 goals, the most of any player in Europe's top five leagues.

He also took to Twitter to congratulate everyone on their success in the 2020/21 season.

"Congratulations Leo Messi and @alexiaputellas winners of the #BallonDor2021, congratulations also to all nominated players!" he wrote.

"I won Striker of the Year Award and no Player can win an individual award without strongest team and loyal fans behind him. Thank you for your support."
