Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino has named Lionel Messi as the player who he thinks should win the Ballon d'Or 2021 award.

Messi, who joined PSG in the summer after Barcelona announced they could not give the Argentine a new contract, is widely considered as a favourite for the award.

The 34-year-old was impressive for Barcelona in the 20/21 season despite the Catalan outfit enduring a disappointing campaign. Messi was also instrumental for Argentina in their Copa America 2021 triumph, winning both the Golden Boot and the Best Player award.

Pochettino believes Messi should win the 2021 Ballon d'Or, and has also named who alongside the PSG superstar should make up the top three for the award.

"The Ballon d’Or should go to [Lionel] Messi without any doubt,” Pochettino said, while speaking to the Spanish-based show El Partidazo de COPE [via PSG Talk].

He added: "And if I didn’t coach Messi, I would say Messi. I answer with my heart. I always say what I feel. On the podium would have to be [Robert] Lewandowski and Cristiano [Ronaldo]."

Messi already holds the record for the player with most Ballon d'Ors, and should he claim the award this year, it will be a record-extending and historic seventh for the Argentine.
