Manchester United are reportedly closing in on signing Raphael Varane after agreeing a  £38.5million deal with Real Madrid, with La Parisien revealing that the two clubs were close to sealing a deal for the centre-back.

It was understood that United had already agreed terms with the Frenchman until 2026, and that he could be unveiled as a Red Devil by the end of the week. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reiterated his desire to find a defender to play alongside Harry Maguire in defence, and are now within touching distance of agreeing a five-year deal with the 28-year-old.

The 2018 World Cup winner will receive an increased wage at Old Trafford, and it has come as a surprise to many that the Los Blancos have agreed to let him go, especially since they already sold Sergio Ramos to Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the summer.

Varane is widely considered as one of the best defenders in the world, having spent 10-years at the Bernabeu, making 360 appearances and helping the club win three LaLiga titles, one Copa del Rey and four Champions League honours.

He is also a key player for the France national squad, appearing 79 times for his country so far, and was immense in their 2018 World Cup win.
