Manchester United reportedly missed out on signing RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano in 2015 because of a row over just £200,000. Upamecano was playing for Valenciennes in 2015 and the Red Devils would have only had to pay £700,000 for a player who is valued at £55million today.
The RB Leipzig star is now one of the world’s most sought-after youngsters, attracting attention from almost all of Europe's top clubs.
The report claims Upamecano was interested in linking up with Louis van Gaal who was in charge of United at the time, but was ‘upset’ when an agreement over a fee could not be reached, with United offering £500,000 for a player Valenciennes valued at £700,000.
A close source added: "Dayot wanted to join United and the fee really was nothing. At first he got the red-carpet treatment but then they would not go that bit further with their offer and he was gone."
Two weeks later, Red Bull Salzburg signed the defender for the asking price, and now he is coveted by almost every big club in Europe, including Premier League big guns United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham.
Jamie Carragher has also tipped Liverpool to make a move for Upamecano after it was revealed that Virgil van Dijk could potentially miss the entire season owing to his horrific injury.
“He’s not the profile of Van Dijk, maybe 6ft 1, 6ft 2, so he’s maybe not that aerial challenger, but if that’s the one Liverpool wanted next summer, bring it forward, pay extra money, and do it on January 1. That means Liverpool would have to get through the next 11 league games without Virgil van Dijk.”
