Manchester City are reportedly in pole position to sign Lionel Messi should the record six-time Ballon d'Or winner decide to leave Barcelona following their humiliating 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the quarter-final of the Champions League.
It has been reported that the Cityzens are willing to pay Messi whatever it takes to lure him away from the Nou Camp and reunited him with Pep Guardiola at the Etihad and that they are confident of signing him if he decides to make a move away in the summer.
The Catalan based club are currently in a crisis following their humiliating exit in the Champions League which comes on the back of them losing the LaLiga title to rivals, Real Madrid this campaign.
Messi looked like a broken man following their loss and it is been reported that he might just decide to leave considering that he halted contract talks with the club management as he was not happy with the way the club was being run by the current board.
The 33-year-old currently has a clause in his contract which allows him to leave the club for free at the end of every season provided he informs the club beforehand and now City are waiting for an indication from the player on his decision regarding his future.
His current £635million buy-out clause puts him out of the reach of every club, but Barcelona don’t have the money to finance the squad rebuild they so clearly need – and may be forced to sacrifice their most precious asset to make it happen.
