Luka Modric has backed his Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema to win the 2021 Ballon d'Or.

Benzema has made the 30-man shortlist for this year's award, and his impressive performances for both Real Madrid and France national team make him a leading contender for the award, alongside Paris Saint-Germain superstar Lionel Messi, Chelsea midfielder Jorginho and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

Modric hopes Benzema wins the 2021 Ballon d'Or, and insists the Frenchman deserves to claim the coveted award. "Let's see, there are several candidates, Karim is one of them and I hope he wins," Modric said in a press conference ahead of Real Madrid's Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk [via Marca].

"He deserves it because of how he has played this year and because of his career.

"He has always been at the top level and has finally won a title with France, which is also important, he is one of the top candidates for sure.

Modric also criticised FIFA'S plans for biennial World Cup, insisting it 'doesn't make sense'. "To me, a World Cup every two years doesn't make sense," the Croatian midfielder said.

"It's special because everyone waits for four years.

"They don't ask the players about anything, they try to do things without asking, to be honest I don't want to watch the World Cup every two years."
