Lorenzo Insigne has revealed that Gennaro Gattuso found talks with Tottenham to be in a bit of a "mess" leading to discussions over the managerial vacancy to break down.

The Italian was in talks to appointed as Jose Mourinho's successor at the north London club, as Spurs continue their season for a new boss, but the former Milan and Napoli manager turned down their advances and explained why to his former player, Insigne.

Speaking to Football Italia, Insigne said: "We’ve texted each other, he told me there was a bit of mess. But now I am focused on the Euros, while he’s on holiday so I am not going to ask him such questions."

Spurs sacked Mourinho just before the Carabao Cup final this year, and are in the third month of their search for a replacement. Former boss Mauricio Pochettino, who is currently at Paris Saint-Germain, and former Inter boss, Antonio Conte, were linked to the hot seat at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but moves failed to materialize for either of them.

Spurs have now been linked to Pochettino, Erik ten Hag, Brendan Rodgers, Julian Nagelsmann, Paulo Fonseca, Gattuso, and Julen Lopetegui. Earlier this week, Sevilla president Jose Castro revealed that Tottenham made a "dizzying" offer to Lopetegui to take over as manager.

In an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena SER (via BBC), Castro said: “Julen rang me and told me. He said he’d received offers he’d not listened to in addition to a dizzying one from Tottenham. But he said he doesn’t forget things and that he is very motivated here. We believed and believe in him, giving him a two-year contract extension, and I’m sure he will bring much more to the club."

Former Wolves' boss Nuno Espirito Santo and Brighton's Graham Potter have also been linked with the position.
