Former AC Milan and Italy defender Alessandro Costacurta has claimed Liverpool are 'not the same team they used to be' and warned the Reds of RB Leipzig, who they face in the Champions League round-of-16.

Liverpool have struggled for form of late, and in the Premier League, the defending champions sit a massive 10 points behind leaders Manchester City who have a game in hand.

Costacurta remarked that Liverpool seemed to be the best team in Europe a few months ago, but added they don't have the same energy now.

"The Germans can be tricky. Liverpool have already lost five games this season. Liverpool have changed, I don’t know if it’s because of COVID or because of empty stadiums. They are not the same team they used to be," Costacurta told Sky Sport Italia [via Football Italia].

"A few months ago they seemed the best team in Europe, by far, now they don’t have the same energy."

Costacurta also stated FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi is no longer the same. The former Italy international was asked whether Messi has been affected by rumours surrounding his future, and he said: "Yes, I think so. He's proved that, he's had a drop, he is no longer the same, it’s impossible not to think the contract row has not had some sort of impact."
