Argentina icon, Lionel Messi could reportedly sign a new contract with Barcelona later today, and various reports state that should he put pen on paper to a new deal then he would be available to play against Juventus in the Joan Gamper Trophy.

The Joan Gamper Trophy is a friendly trophy which serves as the curtain raiser for the Catalan giants ahead of the new season and the reason it is getting hype this time around is due to the fact that the game could see two of the greatest rivals in Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo face each other.

The 34-year-old's future at the Nou Camp has remained a source of speculation despite the fact that it emerged that the player has agreed to a new five-year deal which will see him take a 50 percent pay cut.

Barcelona reportedly cannot register Messi or any of their new signings unless their reduce their massive wage bill by €200million, in order to stay within the salary cap limit set by the LaLiga authorities.

What is understood to have helped the Spanish giants is that recent investment from CVC Capital Partners into Spanish football would allow them to register Messi as long as he takes a 50 percent pay cut.

The record six-time Ballon d'Or who is currently on vacation in Ibiza, is expected to return to Barcelona soon and will give his traditional speech before the Gamper match as captain of the team.

Ronaldo for his part has also been linked with a move away from Turin, though he will most certainly be part of the Juventus squad by the time the Joan Gamper Trophy is played.
